Paul Spooner suggested the following 3 initiatives for consideration at the forum:

  1. The provision of a high standard alcohol & drug free night venue for young people to socialize with each other. The Byron Youth Activity Centre is the perfect local example of such an initiative. It is a social crime that this facility has been shut down for even one night let alone for over 1 year so far. It should be opened & operating now.

  1. The establishment of a Community Youth Arts & Cultural Worker. This person to be engaged in working with young people to provide opportunities for creative social & cultural experiences throughout the year.

  1. The establishment of an Alcohol Free Day in the Byron Shire. This day to highlight the benefits and possibility of having fun without alcohol. The day could take place on the same day as the annual alcohol free Rukkus event that happens during National Youth Week in April each year. People participating in the Alcohol Free Day would be showing by their action that they support young people to have fun without alcohol. Money raised on the day through sponsorships or donations could go towards supporting the operation of the local Street Cruise Program. A program that aims to keep the streets of Byron Bay chilled out on Friday nights making it a safe place for young people to socialise and enjoy themselves without the need for alcohol or drugs.

Group 2 – Community and Culture

·         Place a “tax” on festivals and other larger events in Byron – contribute this money to the community and to support youth activities

·         Alcohol tax – put $ back into the community

·         Restore and re-open the YAC

Group 3 – Young People

·         Young people need a free place to hang –a hall, or other venue, where they can socialize (alcohol-free); play loud music; parent-free, e.g.-          surf club-          YAC

·         A stronger ‘youth voice’ – e.g. youth news; meetings of young people from different schools

·         Affordable entertainment and reliable transport

·         Check that people are not drunk before they enter an event (e.g. festivals) – breath tests

·         Invite reps. From the pubs (e.g. Tom Mooney) to next meeting

Group 4 – Education

·         Teach emotional literacy in schools

·         Mentoring programs – based around 12-step programs; Alateen; N.A.; etc.
